The Initiative for Establishing the Monument

September 21, 2019

Own Street Name

Until 2024, there were limited commemorations in Oosterhout specifically focused on John R. Towle. The John R. Towlestraat was officially unveiled on September 21, 2019, during the celebration of 75 years of liberation of Oosterhout.

The Idea Emerges

Annually, a brief commemoration was held at the street sign at the intersection of John R. Towlestraat and Peperstraat. In 2024, a group of residents decided to establish a permanent monument to honor his heroism enduringly.

The Realization

The realization of the John R. Towle monument is the result of a local civic initiative. The idea emerged in the lead-up to the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden in 2024, when it became clear that there was no physical memorial for John R. Towle in Oosterhout, despite his courageous actions in this region.

A group of Oosterhout residents united in the Committee 80 Years Liberation Oosterhout. The initiators were Paul Janssen, Nico van Kleef, Piet Koremans, Frans Spaan, and Josée Stienstra. Nico van Kleef designed the monument, including the veterans’ plot, inspired by the symbolism of heroism, freedom, and remembrance.

Opening

The monument was placed on John R. Towlestraat, at the intersection with Peperstraat.

The creation of the monument is an example of what local initiative and collaboration can achieve. To continually share Towle’s story and the commemoration process, the development of this website has also begun.
